The Z Curve

How ideas propagate

The Z curve describes the steps encountered while transmitting information. Even more so when you transmit critical information of information which are difficult to accept.

  1. The path to reach the conclusion of a thought or reasoning that is done by a person or a group (group #1)

  2. Sharing this information to another person or group (group #2) that is starting from scratch

    1. The starting point for group #2 will be the same that the one it was for group #1

  3. Group #2 will go through the same path, only not at the same pace.

It is between phase 2 and 3 that group #1 will face:

  • counter-dependance from group #2, which will not necessarily understand or accept the idea at first. Because the group will need to go through the path group #1 went through as well

  • patience, time and pedagogy in order to help group #2 to reach the same level of understanding

Don’t we often underestimate the lack of information and understanding our teams, or colleagues can face when we present them with a project, a situation, or a solution?
